I write this with truly mixed emotions. On the one hand, I celebrate a true American hero, a man who, at extreme risk and great personal sacrifice, performs abortions when and where no other doctor dares to go. A man who fights to bring women a health care option that is denied them by bigoted politicians and their RW constituents.
On the other hand, publishing his name and identifying information puts him at the same risk as Doctor George Tiller and all the doctors who have been intimidated into quitting by being listed at abortiondocs.org. The vitriol from the right is palpable and it is lethal.
Of course, the fact that Esquire magazine is profiling him in their August issue means that my voice is just one very small one, and that his story will soon be heard and his name will be called out in every city and town in America, for better or for worse. I present to you the story of Dr Willie Parker, a man who had an epiphany and has now become the last abortion doctor in Mississippi.
